The lesson arrived while I was recording a scene in which a policeman shouts. My old instinct would have been to lean away from the microphone for safety, but that would also have changed the sound of the voice. This time I stayed put, raised my voice, and trusted the space I had left in the recording.
It worked. The shout sounded like the same person in the same room, simply louder. I could bring its level down later without having baked distortion—or a sudden change of tone—into the performance.
That made headroom feel much less like a technical meter-setting exercise. It is permission to perform naturally without watching the red line or quietly making every dramatic moment smaller. Set the recording level sensibly, separate it from headphone comfort, and then stop negotiating with the meter.
The best kind of headroom is the kind I can forget about once I begin reading.
